Ocean Activities

With the beautiful Pacific ocean outside of your door, there are boundless water activities. We are situated between Honaunau Bay and Kealakekua Bay. Honaunau which is known locally as Two Step is terrific spot for snorkeling and shore diving. The reef hosts sea turtles known in Hawaiian as honu, dolphins, and hundreds of fish. You are never disappointed at Two Step. Kealakekua Bay is a great spot for kayaking. There are many rental shops close by with all the equipment you need to paddle the bay. See the Captain Cook monument and take a dip in the ocean to see the reef.

The Big Island hosts several challenging surf and windsurfing beaches about 20 miles north of us. Some surf shops offer lessons, just ask. If you are lucky enough to visit with us during the winter months (December through April), you will be treated to seeing the whales breaching off shore. If deep sea fishing is your favorite activity, then the Big Island is your island. Just make sure to not jinx the trip by bringing a banana on board. Scuba is extremely popular as well. If you are a diver, then be sure to go out on the manta ray night dive. It is an experience of a lifetime. Jack's Dive Locker in Kailua-Kona offers a two tank dive with skilled divers.

Other Activities on the Big Island

You don't need to stay in the water on the Big Island to have fun. One of the most amazing trips on the island is the trip to the volcano. Volcanoes National Park offers miles and miles of nature trails through craters and over lava. This is a must do activity on the Big Island. If you want a bird's eye view, take a helicopter tour of the Big Island. You can see plunging water falls and lava steaming into the ocean. When you are at the Volcanoes National Park, stop by the old style Hawaiian town of Hilo. Hilo's gardens and markets are a great way to spend an afternoon. The town of Volcano also has a winery with several unique wines. Stop by for a tasting.

Star gazing at the observatory at the top of Mauna Kea is amazing. Be sure to check with the observatory for tour information. Waimea offers great views and sprawling pastures for those who want to horseback ride. There are world class golf courses on the island. Put on your sunscreen and play a few rounds.

If you are a yogi, you don't have to worry about not finding any yoga studios to continue your practice. Just five minutes away the Paleaku Peace Gardens hosts morning and evening classes in an open air studio. Even if you are not into yoga, the peace gardens is a beautiful place for a walk. Big Island Yoga is a few more miles north and offers a variety of classes.

Shopping and dining experiences are unique to each area on the island. Kona offers small shops and open air cafes along Ali'i Drive. A bit farther north in the resort areas, there are trendy shops and gourmet restaurants. Be sure to try some local grinds in the small towns as you explore the island. If you haven't ever been to one, you have to go to a luau. The King Kam in Kailua-Kona has a traditional luau with tons of food and enjoyable entertainment. Most importantly on your trip to the Big Island be sure to relax!
